Abstract:

Introduction

Work- related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are recognized by different symptoms such as discomfort, permanent damage or pain in parts of the body. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in different parts of the body of hairdressers using a meta-analysis.

Methods and Materials / Case Report

The methodology of the present study is based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist. In March 2020, the researchers examined six international databases: Medline / PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, Embase, Science Direct and Google Scholar. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in different organs of the body was assessed by the Nordic questionnaire. The checklist provided by the Joanna Briggs Institute was used to check and control the quality of the articles.

Results

Three hundred forty-one articles were found after searching for all international databases. Finally, 16 papers were entered into the final analysis. The total sample size was 33478 people. Base on result of meta-analysis, the highest prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in hairdressers was observed in lower back 48.08 (95% CI; 35.88 – 60.28), ankle 47.39 (95% CI; 34.40 – 60.39), and neck 39.80 (95% CI; 30.20 – 49.40), respectively. The results showed that there was a difference between male and female hairdressers in terms of the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in different areas of the body.

Conclusion

High prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, especially in the lower back and lower limbs of hairdressers indicating that the ergonomic situation in hairdressing salons is inappropriate .Differences in the type and manner of hairdressing tasks performed by male and female hairdressers may be one of the reasons for the differences in body areas involved in musculoskeletal disorders among them. The development of ergonomic programs aimed to prevent musculoskeletal disorders among hairdressers, especially females, is highly important due to the fact that females are more susceptible to have musculoskeletal disorders than males.
